The total value of goods traded between Japan and China in 2019 shrank 3.7% from the previous year to $340.733 billion, incurring the first year-on-year contraction in three years, according to figures the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) compiled from trade statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF) of Japan and the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GACC).

Exports from Japan (imports to China) decreased 4.8% to $171.515 billion, while imports to Japan (exports from China) declined 2.5% to 169.218 billion. As a consequence, Japan enjoyed a trade surplus of $2.296 billion, remaining in the black for three years in a row. The trade surplus itself, however, waned notably from 2018.

Japan's imports sank 2.5% to $169.218 billion, registering the first year-on-year reduction in three years. By commodity, smartphones and other mobile phone terminals plunged, bringing about a curtailment in electrical equipment. A decline was notable in garments and accessories as well, because more and more products were imported from Southeast Asia.
