The trade war between Japan and South Korea has led to a boycott of Japanese products in South Korea, decreasing containers from Japan to South Korea as a consequence. Container trade between the two Asian economies registered negative growth in the first half (January-June) of 2019, according to statistics compiled by the Korea Nearsea Freight Conference (KNFC).

In January-June, 967,365 TEUs of containers were transported on the Japan-South Korea trade, which decreased 3.7% year on year from 1,004,408 TEUs. South Korea exported 556,427 TEUs, down 3% from 573,556 TEUs, and imported 410,938 TEUs, down 4.6% to 430,852 TEUs. It was the first time since 2015 for first-year throughput to decline from a year earlier. In the first half of 2015, however, containers moved between Japan and South Korea nearly leveled off, only decreasing a minute 0.3%, but in 2019, they plunged more severely.
