Containers to and from ports in China amounted to 22.32 million TEUs in June, according to the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). From a year earlier, they increased 4.7%, although suffering a decline of 80,000 TEUs from a month earlier. As a consequence, accumulated container throughput was brisk on a six-month scale as well, growing 5.1% year on year to 126.99 million TEUs in the first half (January-June).
Containers to and from coastal ports swelled 4.7% to 19.71 million TEUs in June and 4.4% to 112.58 million TEUs in January-June. Meanwhile, inland river ports were responsible for 2.61 million TEUs, hiking by 50,000 TEUs from May and 5.6% from June 2018. In the first half, they processed 14.41 million TEUs in total, enjoying a double-digit improvement of 11.6%.
Looking at January-June container lifting at major coastal ports, Shanghai handled 21.54 million TEUs, up 5% from a year earlier, holding the largest share of the pie. Ranked second were containers to and from Ningbo-Zhoushan, which rose 2.8% to 13.91 million TEUs. Those to and from Shenzhen finished in third place, totaling 12.41 million TEUs, up 2.8%. The top three remained unchanged from January-June 2018.
