The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan will run a pilot project in fiscal 2019 (April 2019-March 2020) on a Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR) route between Japan and Europe to promote the use of the railway network.

The ministry conducted a similar project in fiscal 2018 between Japan and Russia (Moscow), at which it made sure the project could be of use in the future. As such, the ministry will this fiscal year verify whether or not the Japan-Moscow route will be used for a transit service to Europe to move cargo between Japan and Europe. That it to say, it will explore a way to resume the Siberian Land Bridge (SLB).

More specifically, the MLIT will examine effective transport methods, such as freight forwarding; shipping routes; custom inspections and other challenges in consideration of shipper demand. It will also promote cargo transport via the TSR among shippers.
