Ports in China handled 16.63 million TEUs of containers in February, plunging 25% from January due to sluggishness in cargo movement during the Lunar New Year holidays, according to the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). In January-February, 38.8 million TEUs were moved to and from China, up 4.8% year on year.

In the first two months, coastal ports were responsible for 34.69 million TEUs, up 3.5%, while throughput was much more brisk at inland river ports, surging 17.7% to 1.68 million TEUs. Outlining container volumes at the top 10 ports, growth was notable at Qingdao, up 8%, and Xiamen, up 7.1%. On the other hand, Yingkou and Lianyungang suffered negative growths of 3.4% and 0.9%, respectively. Shanghai held the leading share, processing 6.61 million TEUs.
