The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) on March 6 unveiled findings from a pilot cargo transport project on the Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR) that it conducted in the second half of 2018. The total number of days spent from seaports in Japan to railway stations in Moscow was as few as 15 to 30 days, the ministry said, adding that as such, overall transit time could be reduced in half or to one-third from transport by sea.

The MLIT indicated that it will continue to draw plans to promote the use of TSR-based cargo transport in fiscal 2019, as it could be a means of transport rivaling airborne and seaborne haulage. To this end, it will comprehensively consider various factors. For example, shorter transit time could lead to reducing inventory, which could curtail costs, and increasing the number of days for which food products are sold. The TSR can be a better option for commodities that cannot be delivered in time when transported by sea. Hazardous goods are not handled by rail in China Railway Express, but can be accepted by the TSR as long as required formalities are completed.
