Containerized shipments moved to and from ports in Russia increased 9.8% to a total of 5.075 million TEUs in 2018, according to statistics compiled by an association of commercial seaports in the nation. Throughput swelled 9.8% from the previous year, but was smaller than the 15.5% marked in 2017. In breakdown, imports accounted for 2.129 million TEUs, up 9.38%, and exports, 2.103 million TEUs, up 9.25%. Empty containers totaled 761,690 TEUs, up 1.5%.

By region, Baltic Sea ports were responsible for 2.48 million TEUs, up 10.6%, accounting for 48.8% of the total. St. Petersburg, the largest port in Russia, handled 2.13 million TEUs, up 11%, while 59,130 TEUs were moved to and from Ust-Luga, down 8.1%, and 276,430 to and from Kaliningrad, up 15.6%. Far East ports processed 1.67 million TEUs, up 12.4%. Vladivostok handled 944,000 TEUs and Vostochny, 419,200 TEUs, up 13.1%. Container lifting grew a mild 2.3% to 766,900 TEUs in total at Black Sea ports. Novorossiysk, the third-greatest port in Russia, processed 755,000 TEUs, up 2.5%. Containers to and from Arctic Ocean ports improved 6.7% to a total of 160,600 TEUs, coming back from the decrease of 1.6% marked in the previous year.
