Container movement on the trade routes linking South Korea with Japan, China and Russia was all brisk in 2018, making year-on-year improvements.

Between South Korea and Japan, 1,985,351 TEUs were moved, up 3.2%. From South Korea, 1,116,848 TEUs were carried, up 3%, and from Japan, 868,503 TEUs, up 3.4%. Local shipments, however, fell a minute 0.3% to 739,423 TEUs. Those from South Korea enjoyed positive growth, increasing a slight 1.3% to 398,411 TEUs. In contrast, those to South Korea did not, declining 2% to 348,582 TEUs.

To and from China, a total of 3,022,914 TEUs were exported and imported, up 3.7%. Containers from South Korea swelled 4.3% to 1,158,499 TEUs, while those from China increased 3.3% to 1,864,415 TEUs. As for local shipments, they only hiked mildly in both directions, with those from South Korea going up 3.1% to 1,073,505 TEUs and those from China, up 1.5% to 1,743,417 TEUs. Looking at transshipment (T/S) containers, which came back dramatically in both ways, those from South Korea surged 21.8%, and those from China were even more powerful, soaring 39%.

Containers traded on the South Korea-Russia route also made a notable improvement, growing 15.7% to 191,436 TEUs. They were weak from late-2017 to early-2019, just totaling some 800 TEUs per week. Since the second week of January, however, they have returned to normal, amounting to approximately 3,000 TEUs per week.
