The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor recently announced that 6.54 million tons of containerized shipments were exported from the Port of Tokyo in the first half (January-June) of 2018, down 3.2% year on year. Imports, meanwhile, decreased 0.6% to 17.84 million tons for a total of 24.377 million tons, down 0.5%.

Exports of oceangoing containers accounted for 6.273 million tons, down 3.7%, while imports remained nearly unchanged, declining a minute 0.2% to 17.11 million tons. The total of exports and imports amounted to 23.382 million tons, down 1.2%.

In terms of number (the total of loaded and unloaded containers), exports swelled 2% to 1,026,016 TEUs, and imports, 1.6% to 1,201,425 TEUs. The total grew a steady 1.7% to 2,227,441 TEUs, a new record for the six-month period in question.
