The port of Felixstowe, the UK's largest container port, has been facing a turmoil after a new terminal operating system was installed in June and delays are continuing.

Computer glitches resulting from the new IT system have been affecting the overall productivity at the port which led to a lower level of service. The quayside operation has been recovering at the container terminal but the pace of progress is not enough to enhance productivity.

The disruptions are also having a knock-on effect at other UK ports such as Southampton where vessels are being diverted, causing additional cost and disruption. Some major carriers have switched their port rotation in the U.K. from Felixstowe to other U.K. ports.

The diversions are also causing shortage of truck drivers, thus resulting in delays in deliveries and turnaround of empty containers.

Toward the Christmas peak season, the chronicle congestion at the U.K.'s busiest container ports might generate a negative effect on supply chain in the U.K. as a whole.
