A total of 1,392,864 TEUs of containers were traded between Asia and Europe in July, decreasing 3.7% and incurring a year-on-year contraction for three months running, according to data released by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). In the first seven months (January-July), accumulated throughput grew 0.5% to 9,266,526 TEUs, establishing a new record for the six-month period in question.

Looking at shipments exported from Asia in July by origin, 996,785 TEUs were shipped out of China, which fell 5.2%, posting a year-on-year decline for the third consecutive month. Containers from South Korea plunged 12% to 87,873 TEUs, suffering a contraction from a year earlier for two consecutive months. Those from Taiwan waned 7.3% to 29,517 TEUs, sinking year on year for the first time in two months. In contrast, containers from Japan surged 14.1% to 39,046 TEUs, enjoying a year-on-year increase for four months in a row. Growth was obtained for those from most ASEAN nations, which swelled 4.8% to 216,444 TEUs in total.

Compiled from statistics unveiled by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K., the JMC data indicated that container imports from Europe to Asia diminished 3.6% from a year earlier to 650,536 TEUs in July. They contracted in January-July as well, declining 4.1% to 4,428,429 TEUs.

By destination, 333,999 TEUs were imported to China, going down 12.2% and suffering a year-on-year decrease for seven straight months. Containers to Japan and South Korea both stagnant, with the former dropping 5.6% to 52,942 TEUs and the latter, 6.8% to 48,873 TEUs. On the other hand, those to Taiwan climbed 6.2% to 22,978 TEUs, achieving a year-on-year improvement for six months in a row. Shipments to Southeast Asia soared 16.5% to 163,496 TEUs in total, remaining on an upward trend for the 13th straight month.
