Container exports from Japan to China grew 5.1% to 1.038 million tons in July, posting a year-on-year increase for three months in a row, according to data released by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). By commodity, wood pulp, waste paper, paperboards and others, which accounted for the largest part of the pie, surged 33.8% in volume. Coming in second place, in contrast, plastic and plastic products plunged 29.3%.

The JMC data, which had been compiled from trade statistics unveiled by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), indicated that imports from China to Japan, meanwhile, fell 0.7% to 1.86 million tons, suffering a year-on-year decrease for two back-to-back months. Improvements were made for leading items, such as machinery, fruit and vegetables, and processed foodstuffs, but low-ranking commodities were sluggish across the board. In the first seven months (January-July), Japan imported 12.962 million tons from China, which declined 0.7%.
