Container exports to the U.S. from 18 countries and regions in Asia fell 0.1% from a year earlier to 1,547,643 TEUs in August, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). They managed to exceed the 1.5-million-TEU line for two months in a row, although posting the first year-on-year contraction in three months. In January-August, throughput rose 4.6% to 11,375,204 TEUs, hitting a new high for the eight-month term under review.

Based upon data provided by JOC Group’s Port Import/Export Reporting Service (PIERS), the JMC indicated that containers from China waned 1.9% to 1,000,973 TEUs in July. Those from South Korea and Taiwan were both sluggish, going down 2.1% to 67,481 TEUs and 2.5% to 57,962 TEUs, respectively. In contrast, exports from Japan were more favorable, growing 0.7% to 59,849 and marking a year-on-year improvement for four months running.

Containers from ASEAN nations totaled 244,157 TEUs, up 5.3%, while 88,529 TEUs were shipped out of South Asia, up 13.7%. In particular, those from India soared 15.8% to 65,982 TEUs, establishing a record for the month in question.
