The Harbor Modernization Promotion Committee (HMPC) has unveiled that 64 international oceangoing container ports in Japan handled a total of 18,382,552 TEUs of shipments in 2017, up 4.7% from the previous year. The Big Five ports—Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe—were responsible for 13,978,333 TEUs in total, up 4.7%, and the next seven ports—Shimizu, Yokkaichi, Kitakyushu, Chiba, Kawasaki, Shimonoseki and Hakata—processed 2,172,089 TEUs in total, up 3.4%. The combined volume of containerized shipments moved to and from the 12 ports was 16,150,422 TEUs, up 4.5%, while total throughput at the others (local ports) was 2,232,130 TEUs, up 6.2%. Containers to and from Japan increased favorably in general, with those to and from local ports growing more notably.

Exports of loaded containers from the 64 ports swelled 4.3% to a total of 5,962,166 TEUs, up 4.3%. The Big Five shipped 4,598,151 TEUs, up 4.2%, and the next seven, 730,035 TEUs, up 1.6%, for a total of 5,328,186 TEUs, up 3.8%. From the other ports 633,980 TEUs were exported, up 8.7%. The 64 ports imported 8,571,005 TEUs of full containers, up 5.3%. To the Big Five, 6,620,683 TEUs were transported, up 5.1%, and to the next seven, 994,002 TEUs, up 6.3%. To the 12 ports, as such, 7,614,685 TEUs were carried in total, up 5.3%. Imports to the local ports amounted to 956,320 TEUs, up 5.5%.
