Containerized shipments moved between Japan and South Korea in the first half (January-June) of 2018 amounted to 1,003,363 TEUs, growing 6.2% year on year, according to statistics compiled by the Korea Nearsea Freight Conference (KNFC). It was the first time for six-month throughput to reach the one-million-TEU line. It is projected the annual total would exceed two million TEUs if container movement on the trade remains as brisk.

Container traffic on the route was robust in both directions, with exports from South Korea to Japan increasing 7.1% to 572,303 TEUs, and imports from Japan to South Korea, 5.4% to 431,060 TEUs. As for local cargo, 369,026 TEUs were transported in total between the economies, which only rose a slight 1.4%. South Korea exported 198,743 TEUs, going up 4.5%, and imported 170,283 TEUs, down 1.9%.

Regarding transshipment (T/S) containers between third countries, South Korean carriers handled a total of 478,560 TEUs to and from their nation, which swelled so massive a 15.1% as to contribute to the enlargement in the overall container movement between Japan and South Korea. Those from South Korea surged 12.3% to 289,423TEUs, while those to South Korea soared 21.1% to 189,137 TEUs, indicating notable double-digit improvements were accomplished both ways. Feeder containers carried by oceangoing shipping service providers, in contrast, fell 5.7% to 155,777 TEUs. Those from South Korea declined 5.7% to 84,137 TEUs, and those to South Korea plunged 9.5% to 71,640 TEUs.
