The World Container Index assessed by Drewry, a composite of container freight rates on 8 major routes to/from the US, Europe and Asia, is down by 0.3% to $1753.96 per FEU, updated August 23, 2018.

The average composite index for year-to-date is US $1,425 per FEU, which is $95 lower than the five-year average of $1,520 per FEU.

Halfway through the peak season, spot rates remained flat in almost all trades excluding the transpacific routes last week. On the Shanghai-Los Angeles route, the rate fell by $14 (1%) from the previous week to reach $2,182 for a 40ft box. Similarly, the rate on Shanghai-New York declined by $29 or 1% to $3,400 per FEU.
