Trade ports in South Korea handled a total of 787.94 million tons of cargo in the first half (January-June) of 2018, decreasing 1% year on year from 796.14 million tons, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF).
Containerized shipments amounted to 14.111 million TEUs, up 3.9% from 13.581 million TEUs. Imports and exports accounted for 8.193 million TEUs in total, up 2.3% thanks to growth in those to and from Southeast Asia and other regions. Transshipment (T/S) containers strengthened 9.8% to 5.774 million TEUs.
By port, Busan was responsible for 10.608 million TEUs, up 4%. Imports and exports totaled 5.101 million TEUs, up 1%, while T/S containers were more brisk, climbing 8.7% to 5.507 million TEUs.
To and from Kwangyang, 1.13 million TEUs were moved, up 4.1%. The port imported and exported 885,000 TEUs in total, up 0.9%, and processed 248,000 TEUs of T/S containers, up 43.4%.
Container throughput went up 2.8% to 1.51 million TEUs at Inchon, consisting of 1.5 million TEUs of imports and exports, and 10,000 TEUs of T/S containers.
