Trade ports in South Korea handled a total of 142.38 million tons of shipments in May, which increased 8.6% year on year from 131.07 million tons, according to preliminary figures unveiled on June 28 by the nation's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). Containerized shipments grew 5.9% to 2.506 million TEUs from 2.366 million TEUs. Exports and imports totaled 1.447 million TEUs, up 3.4%, while transshipment (T/S) containers amounted to 1.038 million TEUs, up 9.5%.
Looking at container throughput to and from South Korea by port, Busan processed 1.881 million TEUs, up 5.2%. Exports to and imports from China shrank, but those to and from other major trade partners increased. In total, they amounted to 893,000 TEUs, up 0.9%. T/S shipments swelled 9.4% to 987,000 TEUs owing to growth in those to and from China.
Kwangyang handled 204,000 TEUs, up 10.6%. Exports and imports surged 10.3% to 157,000 TEUs thanks to an increase in outbound containers destined to the U.S. T/S containers were more robust, soaring 11.9% to 46,000, resulting from a rise in those moved by compatriot carriers.
The Incheon Port Authority (IPA) unveiled that 274,568 TEUs were transported to and from Inchon, up 8% to set a new record for the month of May. Exports went up 4% to 127,359 TEUs, and imports, up 11.9% to 144,089 TEUs. T/S shipments totaled 2,503 TEUs.
