Spot rates for exporting containerized shipments from China turned upward in Week 26 thanks to a recovery in transport demand. The Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE) unveiled on June 29 the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) was 821.18 points, increasing 9.3% from the previous week. The index came back after posting decreases for three consecutive weeks earlier in the month in question.

Spot rates (excluding terminal handling charges) for containers from Shanghai to Europe was $885/TEU, growing 6.1% from a week earlier. As for shipments to the Mediterranean, freight rates did not hike very much. Spot rates went up a minute 0.9% to $913/TEU.

On the route from Shanghai to the U.S., freight rates surged, as the peak season had begun. Spot rates for shipments destined to the west coast were $1,545/FEU, soared 29.4% from Week 25. Those for containers bound for the east coast climbed favorably, too, rising 15.7% to $2,524/FEU.
