The Port of Hong Kong handled 1.725 million TEUs of containers in May, which fell 5.4% from a year earlier and posted a year-on-year contraction for four months running, according to the Hong Kong Marine and Port Board (HKMPB). Container throughput at the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals plunged 9.1% to 1.345 million TEUs. In contrast, containers processed in midstream operations and at the River Trade Terminal surged 10.1% to 380,000 TEUs in total.
In the first five months (January-May), 8.245 million TEUs were moved to and from Hong Kong, which declined 3%. Kwai Tsing was responsible for 6.425 million TEUs, while 1.819 TEUs were carried to and from other facilities.
