The Port of Kawasaki handled 85.05 million tons of shipments in 2017, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the city of Kawasaki’s Port and Harbor Bureau. In breakdown, international cargo increased 5.5% to 55.98 million tons, and domestic cargo, 0.5% to 29.06 million tons.

Marine containers surged 15.5% to an all-time high of 129,298 TEUs. Those processed at public berths soared 17.8% to 118,736 TEUs, which was also a record high. Oceangoing containers accounted for 98,816 TEUs, jumping 17.9%. Exports and imports both expanded, going up 12% to 44,473 TEUs and 23.3% to 54,343 TEUs, respectively. Oceangoing containers to and from public berths zoomed 19.9% to 92,328 TEUs. Exports ballooned 13.5% to 41,229 TEUs, while imports grew a more notable 25.6% to 51,099 TEUs.
