Container throughput at the Port of New York and New Jersey totaled 1,680,361 TEUs in the first quarter of 2018, representing a 9.6% increase compared to 1,533,004 TEUs in the same period last year.

Throughput of loaded imports soared 12.8% to 872,103 TEUs in the period, while laden exports rose 9.0% year on year to 361,700 TEUs. Empty containers climbed 4.4% to 446,558 TEUs from 427,916 TEUs in the corresponding period in 2017.

In March, container volumes surged 12.7% from a year earlier to 572,576 TEUs. Inbound containers jumped 15.5% to 288,462 TEUs while outbound boxes swelled 14.8% to 132,105 TEUs. Empties went up 6.0% to 152,09 TEUs.
