The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor recently unveiled cargo throughput (preliminary figures) at the Port of Tokyo in 2017. As for international cargo, exports expanded 0.3% from the previous year to 13.402 million tons, and imports grew 5% to 36.46 million tons for a total of 49.863 million tons, which rose 3.7%.

Oceangoing containers amounted to 48.178 million tons, which went up 4.3%, consisting of 12.952 million tons of exports, up 1.4%, and 35.226 million tons of imports, up 5.4%.

In terms of number, the combined volume of loaded and empty containers swell 5.9% to 4,500,156 TEUs, exceeding the four-million-TEU line for seven years in a row and being the busiest port in Japan for 20 consecutive years. In breakdown, exports inflated 4.7% to 2,074,752 TEUs, while imports were also brisk, rising 6.9% to 2,425,404 TEUs.
