Exports of waste paper from Japan to China are decreasing sharply as the government of China has enhanced its import bans. On a customs basis, 99,854 tons were exported in January, which plunged 62.4% year on year from 265,225 tons, according to a report compiled by the Japan Paper Exporters’ Association (JPEA) with statistical data provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

In 2017, Japan’s waste paper exports amounted to 3.73 million tons, which plummeted 10% from the previous year. Those destined to China accounted for 2.44 million tons, which sank 16%, falling below their 2005 record. They held a share of 65.4% of the pie, declining by 5.1 percentage points from a year earlier. Their share further shrank in January, accounting for 40.4%.
