According to statistics compiled by the Korea Nearsea Freight Conference (KNFC), 1,924,631 TEUs of local, feeder and transshipment (T/S) containers were traded between South Korea and Japan, which increased a favorable 5.4% year on year from 1,825,986 TEUs.

Containers increased in both directions between South Korea and Japan, with exports from South Korea going up 4.5% to 1,084,370 TEUs and imports to South Korea, up 6.5% to 840,261 TEUs.

Local containers between the economies improved 2.1% from 726,095 TEUs to 741,557 TEUs in total. As the South Korean won depreciated against the Japanese yen, those from South Korea to Japan only rose a slight 1.2% to 385,761 TEUs. Meanwhile, containers from Japan to South Korea swelled a more robust 3.1% to 355,796 TEUs.

T/S containers between Japan and other Asian nations by way of South Korea enjoyed a double-digit expansion, surging 11.2% to 864,168 TEUs.
