South Korea's trade ports processed a total of 128.21 million tons of shipments in January, which decreased 7.6% year on year from 138.8 million tons, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the nation's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF).
Containerized shipments, on the other hand, increased 2.1% from 2.213 million TEUs to 2.258 million TEUs. In breakdown, exports and imports swelled 4.5% to 1.321 million TEUs in total, while transshipment (T/S) containers registered growth, too, rising 8.8% to 906,000 TEUs.
Looking at containers to and from South Korea by major port, Busan was responsible for 1.687 million TEUs, which climbed 2.4%. Exports and imports hiked 3.8% to 822,000 TEUs in total, and T/S containers were more brisk, growing 6.6% to 865,000 TEUs.
In contrast, container throughput declined 2.4% to 174,000 at Kwangyang. Exports and imports fell 5.25 to a total of 136,000 TEUs, but T/S containers skyrocketed 109.5% to 38,000 TEUs.
Container movement to and from Icheon was weak, only improving a minute 0.1% to 247,000 TEUs.
