A total of 1,398,592 TEUs of containers were moved outbound from Asia to Europe in December 2017, which increased 2.3% from a year earlier and enjoyed a year-on-year improvement for two back-to-back months, according to a report released by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC).

On a full-year scale, Asia exported 15,817,775 TEUs to Europe last year, which swelled 4.1% from the previous year to reach a new all-time high, breaking the previous record of 15,245,500 TEUs set in 2014.

Compiled with statistical data provided by Container Trade Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K., the JMC report added that imports from Europe to Asia grew 5.1% to 689,193 TEUs in December, which also marked a year-on-year expansion for two months in a row.

In 2017, a record-high 7,843,948 TEUs were carried inbound from Europe to Asia, which hiked 5.1% and exceeding the 7,400,837 TEUs transported in 2016.
