A total of 1.18 billion tons of cargo was handled at trade ports in South Korea in the first 10 months (January-October) of this year, which increased 5.5% year on year from 1.119 million tons, according to a preliminary report unveiled by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). Containerized shipments amounted to 20.459 million TEUs, which grew 5.8% from 19.343 million TEUs, due to increases in volume to and from China, the U.S., Southeast Asia and other major trade partners.

Looking at the container throughput more precisely by port, Busan was responsible for 15.319 million TEUs, improving 5.3%, of which exports and imports accounted for 7.603 million TEUs, climbing 2.6%. Containers to and from Kwangyang, on the other hand, declined 3.6% to 1.651 million TEUs, which included 1.311 million TEUs of exports and imports, falling 2.7%. Inchon registered a notable increase thanks to continued growth in container traffic to and from China, Vietnam and Iran, handling 2.245 million TEUs, which surged 17.4%.
