The Japan Maritime Center (JMC) recently reported that in September, 845,111 tons of containers were exported from Japan to China. Due to decreases in wood pulp and waste paper, the total declined 1% from a year earlier, suffering the first year-on-year contraction in four months. On a value scale, on the other hand, they soared 28.4% to \675.7 billion, enjoying a double-digit improvement for the eighth consecutive month.

From China to Japan, meanwhile, 1,723,204 tons were moved, which fell 3.3% and incurred the first year-on-year shrink in seven months. On a yen basis, in contrast, they rose 7% to \1.089 trillion.

As for freight rates in October (according to indices unveiled by Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd.), containers were moved from Yokohama to Shanghai at US380 per TEU, which diminished 5%, while the fare for containers from Shanghai to Yokohama was $610 per TEU, which remained nearly unchanged.
