The combined volume of local and feeder containers moved between South Korea and China in 2016 increased 6.6% year on year to 2,853,997 TEUs, despite the slowdown in the Chinese economy, according to a report compiled by the Yellow Sea Liners’ Committee (YSLC). In breakdown, local containers grew 8.3% to 2,673,808 TEUs, but feeder containers were sluggish, plunging 13.75% to 180,189 TEUs, due to the bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping Co., Ltd. and other factors.

By trade, the YSLC report indicated that shipments from South Korea to China improved 4.86% to 1,142,678 TEUs, which consisted of 1,067,285 TEUs of local containers, which went up 6.1%, and 75,393 TEUs of local containers, down 9.8%. Meanwhile, those from China to South Korea swelled 7.7% to 1,711,319 TEUs. Local cargo accounted for 1,606,523 TEUs, up 9.8%, but feeder cargo dived 16.4% to 104,796 TEUs.
