The Busan Port Authority (BPA) recently announced that a total of 19.46 million TEUs of containers were processed at the Port of Busan in 2016, which increased 2.7% from the previous year. The port, which failed to clear its goal of handling 20 million TEUs, will try again this year to exceed the line.

In breakdown, exports and imports rose 2.2% to 9.817 million TEUs in total, while transshipment (T/S) cargo inflated 3.3% to 10.183 million TEUs.

The BPA anticipates the collapse of Hanjin Shipping Co., Ltd. will still have an adverse impact, decreasing the throughput of T/S containers at Busan by 3% from a year earlier. As such, it will continue to offer preferential treatment to enhance its sales and marketing for shipping alliances. The port authority also intends to increase container throughput by attracting cargo from Southeast Asia, South America, the Middle East and other regions that are projected to grow in the future.
