Major shipping lines moved 1.149 million TEUs of containers in total in May among 13 countries and regions in Asia, which decreased 7% from a year earlier and registered the first year-on-year contraction in three months.

In the first five months (January-May), total container throughput fell 1.8% to 5.67 million TEUs.

In May, double-digit declines were posted in both shipments to and from Japan, which went down 10% to 190,000 TEUs and down 17% to 125,000 TEUs, respectively.

In the first five months, Japan imported 916,000 TEUs in total, which fell 3.5%, and exported a total of 755,000 TEUs, which plunged 15%.
