South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries unveiled on March 24 that trade ports in the nation handled 111.88 million tons of containers in total in February, which decreased 0.4% from the corresponding month of last year. Containers increased 1.6% to 1.98 million TEUs, of which exports and imports were brisk, growing 2.9% to 1.11 million TEUs. Transshipment (T/S) containers rose a milder 0.3% to 880,000 TEUs.

By port, Busan was responsible for 1.564 million TEUs last month, which rose 1.8% year on year, helping the port exceed Hong Kong, which processed 1.213 million TEUs, and become the world’s fifth busiest container port. Container lifting hiked 4% to 173,000 TEUs at Kwangyang; on the other hand, throughput was not as robust at Inchon, to and from which 166,000 TEUs were moved, down 3.4%.
