The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced that the Panama Canal Expansion will be officially inaugurated on Sunday, June 26, 2016.

The expansion work is currently 97 percent complete. Final testing including pilot training will be conducting in the following weeks, leading up to the official inauguration of the expanded canal.

The new expanded locks will allow the passage of container ships as large as 13,000 – 14,000 TEUs, almost three times the existing maximum capacity of 5,000 TEUs.
