A total of 1,793,852 TEUs of containers (including empties) were traded between Japan and South Korea in 2015, decreasing a minute 0.1% from a year earlier to suffer the first year-on-year decline in two years, according to a report compiled by the Korea Nearsea Freight Conference (KNFC). Shipments from South Korea fell 2.6% to 1,010,333 TEUs due to the appreciation of the won against the Japanese yen, incurring a year-on-year contraction for two years in a row. In contrast, those to South Korea were robust, growing 3.2% to 783,519 TEUs.

As for local containers, those from South Korea waned 8% to 377,846 TEUs, but those to the nation improved 5.9% to 341,356 TEUs for a total of 732,754 TEUs, which sank 1.8%.

Outbound feeder cargo plunged 12.2% to 181,259 TEUs, impacted adversely by the slowdown in the Chinese economy. Inbound cargo diminished 15% to 166,740 TEUs, making the total also register a double-digit contraction of 13.8% to total 347,999 TEUs.

Transshipment (T/S) shipments were brisk in both directions, with those from South Korea went up 7.4% to 451,228 TEUs and those to the country, up 14.9% to 275,423 TEUs for a total of 726,651 TEUs, up 11%.
