Ports in Vietnam processed a total of 10,009,364 TEUs of containers in 2014, according to a report compiled by the Vietnamese Seaports Association (VPA). The annual container throughput surged 18.4% year on year from 8,452,250 TEUs, exceeding the 10-million-TEU mark for the first time to reach an all-time high.

By region, ports in southern Vietnam were responsible for 7,043,070 TEUs last year, which soared 18.2% from the previous year, enjoying a share of 70.4% of the pie. Those in northern Vietnam handled 2,601,566 TEUs in total, which went up 16.5% and helped them hold a share of 26%. Ports in central Vietnam processed 364,728 TEUs, which improved a more notable 38.7% and accounted for 3.6% of the total. The shares of southern, northern and central ports all remained nearly unchanged from a year earlier.

In southern Vietnam, Cat Lai Port, which is operated by Saigon Newport Corporation (SNP), processed 3,827,115 TEUs in 2014, which jumped 17.6% from 2013. The figures indicated that some 54% of the containerized shipments to and from southern Vietnam and approximately 38% of those to and from the Southeast Asian nation were handled at Cat Lai.
