The combined volume of containerized shipments that major shipping companies handled in the first half (January-June) of this year among 13 Asian countries and regions increased a mild 2% year on year to 7.327 million TEUs. Dry cargo grew 1.6% to 6.941 million TEUs, accounting for 94.7% of the total, while reefer containers were more brisk, improving 9% to the balance of 386,000 TEUs.

Exports from Japan declined 1.5% to 905,000 TEUs (863,000 TEUs of dry cargo, down 1.6% and 42,000 TEUs of reefer cargo, up 0.4%). On the other hand, imports to Japan fell 2.3% to 1.102 million TEUs (1.043 million TEUs of dry cargo, down 2.5% and 59,000 TEUs of reefer cargo, up 3%).

In June alone, intra-Asia containers declined 1.4% from a year earlier to 1.213 million TEUs. Shipments from Japan went down 2.1% to 149,000 TEUs, while those to Japan, down 5.8% to 153,000 TEUs.
