Exports from Japan to China plunged 25.5% from a year earlier to 760,950 tons in February, according to a report on trade between the two Asian economies that was unveiled on April 15 by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). However, combined cargo movement for the first two months (January-February) was not as sluggish, because it was brisk in January.

The outbound route saw a notable decrease in terms of value as well, sinking 23.5% to \468 billion. Freight rates for services from Yokohama to Shanghai have fallen and been fluctuating in a range of \360-370 per TEU since they peaked in February 2013, according to Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd. of the U.K.

In contrast, the JMC report added that shipments from China to Japan grow favorably both in volume and value, surging 34.1% to 1,853,549 tons and 53.7% to \1.281 trillion, respectively. In the first two months, however, the volume of inbound shipments rose a mere 4%, as it was stagnant in January.
