The combined volume of containerized shipments handled at India’s 12 state-run ports in fiscal 2014 (April 2014-March 2015) was steady, growing 6.71% year on year to 7.958 million TEUs, according to an announcement made by the Indian Ports Association (IPA). On a tonnage scale, the total was 119.379 million tons, which improved 4.11%.

By port, container throughput went up 7.3% to 4.466 million TEUs at Jawaharlal Nehru Ports, the busiest container port in India; up 5.7% to 1,552 million TEUs at Chennai Port; up 12.1% to 630,000 TEUs at Kolkata Port; up 10.2% to 560,000 TEUs at V.O. Chidambaranar Port (formerly Turicorin Port) and up 5.2% to 365,000 TEUs at Kochin Port, where DP World of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) runs the Vallarpadam Terminal. On the other hand, container movement to and from Visakhapatnam Port was not as brisk, falling 5.3% to 248,000 TEUs.
