In January, 10,841,300 TEUs of containers were traded worldwide, decreasing year on year for the fourth consecutive month, according to a report compiled by Container Trades Statistics, Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K. The global total was down 2.09% from a year earlier and 5% from a month earlier. The freight rate index (100 points in 2008) for the month in question was 81 points, down 6 points year on year to hit a record low since January 2014. From December, it was down 1 point.

Imports to and exports from Asia and Europe were all sluggish, with those to Asia going down 6.97% to 3,962,900 TEUs; those from Asia, down 0.69% to 6,600,400 TEUs; those to Europe, down 2.82% to 2,397,100 TEUs and those from Europe, down 1.62% to 1,736,200 TEUs. Outbound containers from North America suffered a double-digit decline of 14.59% to total 955,100 TEUs; in contrast, inbound containers were brisk, growing 3.95% to 1,911,700 TEUs.
