Container exports from Asia to Europe increased 8.6% year on year to 15,396,122 TEUs in 2014, according to a report released recently by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). Thanks to the European economy, which was on a mild recovery trend, throughput on the route was a new record since 2011. Imports from Europe to Asia were also robust, growing 2.1% to 6,952,259 TEUs. Exports from Japan to Europe fell 5.4% to 558,552 TEUs, while imports were not brisk, either, decreasing a steep 11.6% to 720,476 TEUs.

Looking at containers from Asia to Europe by origin, the JMC report, which was compiled from statistical data provided by Container Trades Statistics, Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K., added that those from China swelled 6% to 10,696,772 TEUs, holding a share of 69.5% of the pie. Shipments from South Korea improved a notable 36.6% to 1,140,783 TEUs. Growth was also notable in containers from Southeast Asian nations, with those from Vietnam soaring 27.4% to 641,893 TEUs; from Thailand, 20.9% to 560,075 TEUs and from Malaysia, 18.9% to 357,943 TEUs. On the other hand, those from Taiwan and Hong Kong were not as favorable, going up a minute 1.7% to 395,073 TEUs and diminishing a considerable 16.7% to 347,307 TEUs, respectively.
