Exports of containerized shipments from Japan to China totaled 1,047,802 tons in April, declining 6.7% from a year earlier, according to a report compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) on container movement between the two Asian nations. Imports of containers fell, too, increasing a much milder 1.3% to 1,949,365 tons. On a value scale, improvements were registered in both directions, with outbound shipments going up 8.6% to 615.1 billion yen and inbound shipments, up 6.7% to 1.159 trillion yen.

Freight rates for services from Yokohama to Shanghai have been fluctuating within a range of between $360 and $370 since they began to fall after reaching a peak in February 2013. The recent development of the China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) indicated that rates for services from China to Japan have been on the decline since May, although they hiked temporarily earlier this year.
