In the runup to the labor contract negotiations between the International Longshore (ILWU) and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), a coalition of 67 groups representing exporters/importers, manufacturers, logistics service providers and other organizations related to international trade has urged the two negotiating parties to reach agreement on a new contract without any work stoppages.

''It is critical that a new agreement be reached without disruptions to the movement of freight,'' they said in a letter sent to the presidents of the ILA and PMA.

Contraction negotiations began Monday, May 12 to replace the current six-year agreement, which expires at 5:00 p.m., July 1.

The contract covers 25,000 union members at 29 containerized ports along the western coastline of the U.S. and Canada.
