South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) reached agreement last week with Lianyungang, China to extend the mutual traffic of sea-land intermodal freight cars network between the nations to the Chinese city.

In the abovementioned intermodal transport service which allows mutual traffic of trailers, containers will be carried on ferries while being loaded on trailers. Not requiring cargo to be transshipped or transloaded at gateway ports, it is expected to contribute to reducing transport costs, transit time and the likelihood of cargo damage. It is also hoped to be of great advantage when moving shipments in emergency cases and handling dangerous commodities.

The intermodal service has so far been operated on a trial basis on the seven routes between the two countries including between the gateway ports of Incheon and Weihai.
