More than 1,000 Japanese enterprises do business in India now. As of October 2013, a total of 1,072 companies from Japan had launched operations in India, growing by 146 (15.8%) from a year earlier, according to a report compiled jointly by the local embassy of Japan and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). The total number of business footholds run by Japanese businesses had exceeded 2,500. Municipalities in southern India hosted more business bases than those in any other region.

In October last year, Japanese enterprises ran 2,542 business footholds in total, which included branch offices and other business locations, surging by 738 (40.9%) year on year from 1,804. However, the considerable increase in number was attributed primarily to a change made in the latest report, which began covering all business locations, including offices operated directly by parent firms, which had never been handled in the previous reports.
