A total of 14.284 million TEUs of containerized shipments were traded among 12 countries and regions in Asia in 2013, increasing 5% year on year from 13.598 million TEUs. Imports to and exports from Japan were both steady, growing 2% to 2.263 million TEUs and 4.9% to 1.875 million TEUs, respectively.

Looking at inbound containers to Japan by origin, those from China went up 2.2% to 1.072 million TEUs; from Thailand, up 4.3% to 203,000 TEUs; from Taiwan, up 0.3% to 192,000 TEUs; from Indonesia, up 7% to 131,000 TEUs; from Vietnam, up 15.4% to 114,000 TEUs; from Malaysia, up 0.86% to 84,000 TEUs; from the Philippines, up 25% to 77,000 TEUs; from Myanmar, up 14.4% to 4,000 TEUs and from Cambodia, up 42.1% to 1,600 TEUs. On the other hand, imports from South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore were stagnant, falling 9.2% to 221,00 TEUs, 1% to 125,000 TEUs and 9.2% to 38,000 TEUs, respectively.

As for outbound shipments from Japan, those to Thailand and Singapore both declined minutely, decreasing 0.4% to 202,000 TEUs and 0.8% to 45,000 TEUs, respectively. In contrast, exports to the nine other economies in the region were all brisk. Those to China went up 3.9% to 739,000 TEUs; to Taiwan, up 3.1% to 197,000 TEUs; to South Korea, up 3.4% to 174,000 TEUs; to Hong Kong, up 6.3% to 166,000 TEUs; to Malaysia, up 1.5% to 93,000 TEUs; to Indonesia, up 10.2% to 98,000 TEUs; to Vietnam, up 20.8% to 84,000 TEUs; to the Philippines, up 13.2% to 57,000 TEUs and to Cambodia, up 35.6% to 8,000 TEUs. Those to Myanmar doubled from 6,000 TEUs to 12,000 TEUs, although they were still small in terms of volume.
