In November 2013, 1.302 million TEUs of containerized shipments were traded among 12 economies in Asia, which increased 7% year on year from 1.217 million TEUs. The trade’s container movement was favorable on an accumulated basis as well, growing 5% to 13.56 million TEUs in the 11 months from January to November.

In the month in question, exports from Japan to the 11 other nations in the region rose 4.7% to 168,000 TEUs, and imports were also brisk, improving 2.8% to 218,000 TEUs. In the first eleven months, outbound containers hiked 3.9% to 1.774 million TEUs and imports, 2.4% to 2.216 million TEUs.

Looking at containerized shipments exported from Japan in November by destination, those to China, Thailand, South Korea and Singapore declined 6.4% to 59,000 TEUs, 1.3% to 21,000 TEUs, 6.4% to 12,000 TEUs and 3.9% to 3,800 TEUs, respectively. In contrast, containers to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines were all robust, contributing to the overall growth of those from Japan. They surged 21% to 19,000 TEUs, 9.1% to 14,000 TEUs, 16.1% to 11,000 TEUs, 30.8% to 9,000 TEUs, 14.8% to 8,000 TEUs and 9.2% to 6,000 TEUs, respectively. Even more significant growth was registered for those to Cambodia and Myanmar, which soared 42.9% to 700 TEUs and skyrocketed 900% (from 400 TEUs) to 4,000 TEUs, respectively.

As for imports to Japan, meanwhile, those from China were the only sector to suffer a year-on-year decrease, falling 8.7% to 95,000 TEUs. On the other hand, those from the 10 sources all increased. Containerized freight from Thailand went up 18.7% to 23,000 TEUs; from South Korea, up 4.5% to 21,000 TEUs; from Taiwan, up 12.7% to 18,000 TEUs; from Vietnam, up 36.4% to 14,000 TEUs; from Hong Kong, up 8.6% to 13,000 TEUs; from Indonesia, up 7.5% to 13,000 TEUs; from the Philippines, up 28.3% to 10,000 TEUs; from Malaysia, up 3.6% to 7,000 TEUs; from Singapore, up 3.6% to 3,000 TEUs; from Myanmar, up 29.3% to 470 TEUs and from Cambodia, up 300% (from 50 TEUs) to 200 TEUs.
