South Korea’s Port of Busan handled a total of 13,190,604 TEUs of containerized shipments in the first nine months (January-September) of 2013, which represented a year-on-year increase of 3.1%, according to the Busan Port Authority (BPA).

In breakdown, local cargoes accounted for 6,688,212 TEUs, which improved 0.9%, with imports going up 0.2% to 3,307,561 TEUs and exports up 1.6% to 3,380,652 TEUs. Transshipment (T/S) cargoes amounted to 6,498,191 TEUs, growing 6.8%, and domestic cargoes, the balance of 4,202 TEUs, decreasing 5.4%.

The BPA added in an announcement that it made in late October that Busan New Port was responsible for processing 8,106,991 TEUs of containers in the nine-month period in question, surging 17.1% from a year earlier.

Local containers soared 12.9% to 3,632,068 TEUs, which comprised 1,748,702 TEUs of imports, going up 12%, and 1,883,366 TEUs of exports, up 13.7%. T/S containers jumped 22.9% to 4,471,101 TEUs, but domestic containers fell 6% to 3,822 TEUs.

Container throughput at Busan New Port enjoyed a share of 61.5% of the total handled at the Port of Busan, increasing 0.1 percentage points from the January-September period of 2012.
