The Port of Yokohama handled a total of 58.96 million tons of shipments in the first half (January-June) of 2013.
Cargo throughput decreased 5.3% from a year earlier, representing the first year-on-year decline in two years.
Oceangoing shipments fell 7.8% to 36.86 million tons, of which exports and imports were both sluggish, going down 9.5% to 15.68 million tons and 6.5% to 21.18 million tons, respectively.
Containers diminished 7.1% to 20,890,802 tons in volume; in terms of number, they waned 6.9% to 1,437,720 TEUs.
In the first six months, completed automobiles, industrial machinery and other major export commodities suffered year-on-year declines, leading to the decrease in the overall cargo throughput at the port.
In particular, exports to China, the leading destination of shipments from Yokohama, plunged 25.8% to 2.92 million tons, suffering a year-on-year contraction for three years in a row.
