The governments of Japan and Myanmar on June 19, 2013 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for upgrading their cooperation on overland transport.

To enhance their partnership on the field of overland transport, Tokyo and Naypyitaw will exchange information and views, foster human resources, promote human interchanges, hold joint seminars and make other efforts to develop, manage and operate policies and technologies for reinforcing overland transport and other railway-related infrastructure.

The governments will also endeavor to promote bilateral interchanges by holding regular vice-ministerial talks as well as encouraging governmental organizations, research institutes and private entities to work together.

The MoU will take effect for the next five years and can be extended at the end of the term when agreement is reached between Tokyo and Naypyitaw.

As part of their understanding of cooperation on railway operations, Japan will shortly send a team of experts to Myanmar, who will hold workshops on track maintenance.

The two Asian nations also agreed to begin exchanging opinions on cooperation on the field of bus operations at the working level as soon as possible.
